Top 10 Tuesday May 31

Hello and welcome to another Top 10 Tuesday! Originally created by The Broke & the Bookish, Top 10 Tuesday now lives with Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. It features a different literary-based theme each week and this week our topic is….

Top 10 Comfort Reads!

For the most part, comfort reads for me are books that I have read that I absolutely loved, but more than that….books that for some reason or other, spoke to me more than most books that I read. They are generally (but not always) some form of a romance novel, one that gives me “all the feels”. I used to do a lot of rereading when I was younger, especially in high school and university but these days, I don’t reread much at all – there are just too many new books out there every week! I don’t even have time to read all the new releases that I want to, let alone to go and reread much. However I do still occasionally choose to pick up something I’ve read before that is a great comfort to me, usually at a time where I do not have the mental energy for something new. These are some of my favourites!

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

I reread this almost obsessively back when I first read it. I was going through a really awful time and for some reason or other, this book was just…..everything I wanted in a read. It’s been a while but since then I have occasionally pulled it out and reread some of my favourite parts.

Silent In The Sanctuary by Deanna Reborn

The third book in the Lady Julia Grey series and the one where everything is super crazy with Brisbane. The tension and angst in this book is next level but it’s also the book where it gets resolved and progresses and you realise that the author isn’t going to draw everything out in the same cycle for every book.

Forget You by Jennifer Echols

I love a good amnesia story! I really love Doug in this story, Zoey kinda puts him through such hell and she’s always thinking the worst of him….I do like an opposites attract looking story. Doug kinda comes off as a bad boy but he isn’t really.

The Obernewytn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody

I’ve talked a lot on here about this series – I’ve been reading it since I was 14 and the last book only came out a couple of years ago so it ended up being quite a long term investment. I’ve read the first three honestly probably over 100x and I did several full rereads whilst waiting for the second last and final book.

It’s Not Me, It’s You by Mhairi McFarlane

I love Mhairi McFarlane, so many of her books would fit this category for me but this one is definitely my favourite. I love the ending – I’ve reread that part of it SO MANY TIMES.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

I’m jumping the gun a bit with this one because it only just came out and I’ve only read it once but I already know that it is 100% the type of book that I find a comfort read and definitely one I would pick up repeatedly if in need of such a thing. In fact, any of Emily Henry’s adult releases would fit the bill here for me.

The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley

I like telepathy books almost as much (maybe as much?) as I like amnesia books. This has a bit of everything. Lots of history and fun romance and a link between two characters that is so fun.

Crosstalk by Connie Willis

The Firebird reminded me of another telepathy book I loved (and reread a lot around the same time I was reading The Hating Game all the time) – Crosstalk by Connie Willis. I loved this! I have the audiobook as well and have listened to it quite frequently, whenever I cannot be bothered starting a new audiobook.

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

This was the first classic I read that I really loved – and seeing the BBC adaptation a year or two later really cemented that love and now I reread it relatively often. Probably every other year maybe? I feel like Austen is the sort of author where the more you read one of her books, the more you notice that she does with relationships and observations. I always find something different when I reread an Austen book (I’ve read this one, S&S, Emma and Persuasion quite a few times).

In At The Deep End by Penelope Janu

Another romance I have reread quite obsessively! I also love the scientific stuff in this one (anything featuring Antarctica is a win for me), the opposites attract, the grumpy hero….all of it!

And there we are – 10 books I find comfort reads. A lot of them are romances of some description or contain romantic elements, so I guess it’s what I go to when I need that sort of read. I want something that I know is going to be satisfying – sometimes you just cannot invest yourself in a new book, you want something that is familiar.

What are you comfort reads?

  1. Great list – have heard much good about Emily Henry! I discovered the pleasure of romance during covid for its comfort value.
These are the authors to whom I have found myself turning for comfort.

  2. I haven’t read any of these but have just discovered Sussanah Kearsley, and Firebird looks interesting

Great list, I don’t reread either. Sometimes it makes me wonder why I keep so many books on my shelves!

The obernewtyn series sure looks interesting!

    My post:

    • It’s really good (although I think the last book suffered a bit because the author was so pressured to finally finish the series). But the world building is next level.

    Some good looking books there!

    Have a great week!

  7. I’ve not reread a book in years, ever since I’ve been blogging, I’ve not really had the time, so many new books to read! When I did though, the ones I tended to go back to were childhood favourites like Harry Potter.
