Top 10 Books On My Summer Winter TBR

Yes, it’s winter here and I’m a bit depressed about it. Luckily, there’s books!

Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel.

Wolf Hall was on my autumn TBR for a top 10 Tuesday post a couple months ago and I did end up reading it within that season. So I’ve bought the second in the trilogy and I’ll be aiming to read it later this month.

The Silk House by Kayte Nunn.

Kayte Nunn is an Australian author writing incredibly vivid historical fiction and I’ve really loved her previous two books. This one is due out at the end of this month I think and it’ll definitely be a priority.

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo.

Not that long ago I read With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo and thought it was absolutely brilliant. So I’m really excited to read this – I’m hoping that I love it just as much.

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. 

I’ve heard a lot about this author recently and last week there was a thread on twitter about pay disparity in publishing, with authors of colour often receiving far less for their advances, even when they already had successful titles under their belt and discussion of this author featured quite prominently. Everyone had incredible praise for this series and couldn’t believe it hadn’t translated into a bigger advance or more favourable contract for the author so I thought I would give it a try. Also a need a book that is “Afrofuturism or Africanfuturism” for a challenge I’m doing and this series comes quite highly recommended as fulfilling that.

The City Of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. 

I just bought a copy of this book – I remember seeing a huge stack of the second book in a local bookstore, when it first came out and thinking what a beautiful cover! I snapped a photo to look it up later as I didn’t have any service in the store and I wasn’t familiar with the books. The third one has just been published, so I’ve started to buy them and this one will be arriving this week so it’s immediately going on my ‘read soon’ pile.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. 

I actually cannot believe that I haven’t read this. It’s an Australian classic and it’s over 40 years old. I bought a copy (the version here) about 3-4 years ago and have still not gotten around to picking it up. However it’s the selection for my online bookclub’s September read, which means I’m definitely going to have to start reading it in August, which makes it a book for my winter pile. It’s close to 800p in large paperback form so going to need to give myself some time to finish it. Looking forward to finally tackling this one!

Star-Crossed by Minnie Darke. 

Earlier this year I read The Lost Love Song by Minnie Darke and absolutely loved it. I thought it was the most beautiful story. So I’m really keen to read Star-Crossed, the book she wrote before that and see if I love it just as much. This sounds a bit funny and I kind of need some funny right now.

The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish. 

Review copy from the publisher. I’ve had this for a couple months but it isn’t out until July so I probably won’t read it until around that time. It’s a thriller type about someone who notices the friend they commute with to work each morning hasn’t turned up. That person is then met by the police….and it seems like someone thinks they might’ve murdered their friend. It’ll probably have lots of twists or turns in it.

The Yield by Tara June Winch. 

A story by an Aboriginal (Wiradjuri) Australian, I’ve seen this highly praised. It was shortlisted for the Stella Prize for Fiction and from the publisher/Goodreads: “Profoundly moving and exquisitely written, Tara June Winch’s The Yield is the story of a people and a culture dispossessed. But it is as much a celebration of what was and what endures, and a powerful reclaiming of Indigenous language, storytelling and identity.”

The Spanish Promise by Karen Swan. 

I am continuing to work my way haphazardly through Karen Swan’s backlist after reading several of hers recently. This time I have chosen a “summer vibes” one to help take me away from the dreariness of winter. This one involves a “wealth counsellor who helps people navigate the emotional side effects of sudden wealth syndrome” which doesn’t actually sound like a real job to be honest. But this should be fun, I’ve really enjoyed all the books I’ve read by her so far and I need a bit of escape!

Will I read all of these? Or none of these? Who knows. As always with these seasonal TBR’s, making them is just the first step and that’s the easy part. It’s actually ending up reading the books I’ve got listed that’s the hard part!
