Top 10 Series I’ve Given Up On/Don’t Intend To Finish

  1. The Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich. This still makes me sad. This was my favourite series for so long but I’m not 18 any more and now that I’m older than Stephanie, she just becomes more pathetic. Plus I’m so tired of the love triangle that goes no where, the animals and various other things. In fact when I culled my books for moving, I gave all my Stephanie Plum books away. So I guess that really does show that I’m done here.
  2. The Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard. I never -loved- this but there were elements I enjoyed. The end of the 3rd book basically killed any desire I had left to finish this and I really don’t care how it ends. Maybe one day I’ll read some spoilers or something but I won’t be reading any more books.
  3. The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward. Meh. I keep getting sucked back in by books that revisit the original BDB but then I end up not really liking them that much. And I don’t like many of the ‘new’ peeps. Probably time to let this one go.
  4. The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare. Okay, this one I’m actually in two minds over. I feel as though I’ve gone as far as I really care to go with Jace and Clary etc. But I have some of the spin off books and they look kind of interesting and even though they’re set years ago, do I need to really finish the Mortal Instruments before I read them? Or should I just not bother and read the spin off series’ anyway?
  5. Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. I have the last 2 books in this series that I own and I still haven’t read them. I know how the series ends (everyone knows how the series ends). I’m not a fan of the particular ending that the author chose – I get why she did it, I just don’t really like it. Don’t really want to read it. So I won’t ever bother finishing out this series I don’t think.
  6. Anita Blake Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. These books make me cringe. Ages ago everyone kept recommending them to me and I read the first one and it was just ok? And then I heard about where it goes and it’s really not my sort of thing.
  7. The Harry Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I read the first one and I liked it. I’ve nothing against the series but I feel as though I came to it just a bit too late. There are so many books in this series now and I……aint got time for all dat.
  8. Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon. I read the first book and it was just okay for me. I didn’t like Jamie all that much. I really see no reason to go on with it.
  9. Fifty Shades Series by E.L. James. I’ve read the first book. Christian Grey is……..not for me. And Anastasia is so appallingly stupid that I’d rather stab myself in the eye with a fork than read any more in this series.
  10. Shatter Me Series by Tehereh Mafi. Read the first book, decided right away that I wouldn’t ever be reading any of the others. It’s really popular and a lot of people love it, but I just never really got into it and I didn’t want to read anything further about any of the characters.

I really love a series so I actually had to think really hard for 10 that I don’t like enough to finish or continue on with. I have a few series where I’ve set it aside but I will probably return to them one day – but these ones here are the ones where I’ve just really hated the first book or have become so disheartened by them that I just can’t continue.

I can totally see why you’d be put off by the Outlander series. They’re such big books!

  2. Hopefully I like The Red Queen series and the remainder of The Mortal Instruments series; I’m on the waiting list at the library for both. I haven’t read any of the others.

    • Hopefully you enjoy Red Queen more than I did. I didn’t mind Mortal Instruments, I just feel as though most of the “twists” seem to just be done for shock value and you can see through them immediately.

  3. I agree with Butcher’s Dresden. But I think I read 3 or 4 before I stopped. And I did read book 1 of 50 Shades. I felt that as a blogger I needed to see what all the buzz was about (do you buy that?). Regardless of my motive, I didn’t need to read 2 and 3.

AAh, I agree with the BDB books. I loved this series, and everything was fine, until Lover At Last, Qhuinn and Blay’s book and that was a huge letdown for me. I’m sorry to hear about the Stephanie Plum series. I know it can get kind of old when a series goes on for so long and the focus is the same one main character. I’m hoping at least the first three books are good, because I haven’t yet had time to read any of them. And I agree with The Southern Vampire Mysteries. I have the last 3 books to read. Well, actually the last 4, because Dead In The Family (I think that was the name…when we get to find out who Eric’s maker is) was a huge DNF for me.

    • The first say 10 Stephanie Plum books are fab. For me, it was all downhill after that. They feel ghostwritten somewhere in the teens on. And they get more ridiculous.

I haven’t started the Outlander series yet, I’m not really sure if it’s my thing but I’m hoping to start the Shatter Me series at some point. It sucks though when a series sort of lets you down. The Divergent series was a big problem for me, I couldn’t even finish the last book 😦 Here’s my TopTen:

I just finished War Storm and, though it is a bit of a slog, I actually think it is a pretty good conclusion. I completely understand not wanting to read it (looking up the plot is much quicker than getting through 662 pages!

  7. I’ve given up on the Red Queen series too, I only read the first two books, but I struggled so much with the second that I have no intention of reading the third.

  8. Great list! I found that I enjoyed Cassandra Clare’s other series more than I did the Mortal Instruments. The Infernal Devices was my favourite. I wouldn’t say that you necessarily have to read the rest of TMI to understand everything, but sometimes it does help with insight!

  9. Have to agree with you about Stephanie Plum! The first 5 or 6 were so funny and then all of a sudden….nope. Great list!

  10. I never could get into the BDB books. A friend of mine RAVED about how they were the best and… not for me. Also, I must be the only person who doesn’t know how the Sookie books end. Hahaha.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  11. The Outlander series was on my TTT list as well. I loved so many parts of the story in Outlander, but the actually relationship between the main characters was just really upsetting and didn’t leave me walking away with warm fuzzies.

  12. I like what you said about Stephanie Plum, about it making you sad. I loved those books once upon a time. She, Lula, and the gang gave me some of the best laugh out loud moments I’ve ever had with books. But, by the 12th or 13th book, I was beginning to see the writing on the wall – same ol’ story, different book, nothing new. I quit after #17 but a few years later I caved and read #18. Reading it just reinforced why I stopped in the first place. I read Outlander and really, really like Jamie, but haven’t been able to go forward to the second. First, it’s a 40-hour audiobook and second, I’ve watched the series on STARZ, so both of those have ruined any chances of my continuing the series.

Your comments about 50 shades made me laugh!

  14. Anita Blake and Black Dagger Brotherhood were on my list too – I actually read a lot of them, but it’s been forever since I have read them and I forgot a lot so I would have to reread. On the other hand, I have read 22 of the Stephanie Plum’s and they are still my guilty pleasure read haha 🙂

  15. I’ve seen The Red Queen series on a lot of TTT lists this week. I’ve never read them, I was waiting for the series to be completed before starting, but now I’m contemplating crossing it off my TBR list. I wonder if I might enjoy Outlander, but it’s just so intimidating!
