July was another pretty good reading month. I read a few really good books, a lot of just okay books and a couple of books that were…not that great. But overall, a pretty steady month. I’ve noticed that my kindle really got a workout during July, 15 books read on it during the month which is pretty high for me. I’ve also noticed that the poor thing is getting a wee bit slow (it’s four years old) and it’s probably time to think about replacing it sooner or later. It has a real lag now between loading menu screens and also flipping pages. But I can honestly say that I’ve really come to appreciate it, especially during times I go away to visit my family interstate. When I bought it I didn’t really know how much use I’d get out of it and although I still prefer print books, I think it’s a great addition and I could not see myself being without an eReader in the future at all.
I’m falling off the wagon re: male authors! Only 1 this month. I’m not sure how many I’ve read for the year but I do know that I’m tapering off there considerably. Probably because I’m not making the effort to read more of them, given that I’m just happy to be enthused about reading again after my brief slump a couple of months ago (although interestingly enough, it was a male author that got me out of that slump in George R.R. Martin). I’ve had a look at what I’ve got so far to read for August as well and there’s not many men to be seen.
I have however, started reading a classic novel. I’m about halfway through North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell, which I’m reading after seeing the adaptation starring Richard Armitage. I really enjoyed that and I’m liking the novel as well. I’m reading it on the kindle, so I had no idea how long it was before I started but it definitely feels much longer than I expected. I’ve actually been reading it for a little while, just here and there. Hoping to get it finished soon. And then I think I’ll either re-read Pride & Prejudice which I don’t think I’ve ever reviewed, or maybe start Northanger Abbey.
I’m acing some challenges – I’ve read 57 novels for the Australian Women Writers Challenge this year and 11 for the Aussie Author Challenge (all males for that one). But my Literary Exploration Challenge has kind of fallen by the wayside again and we shall not talk about the Classics Club Challenge.
Last month I was disappointed that Richard Flanagan’s brilliant The Narrow Road to the Deep North was not the winner of the Miles Franklin. However it has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize so now I have another prize to cheer it on for. A couple of other books on that longlist interest me so I might look at tracking them down.
